It Starts with Bed-Dancing

By Meloney Hall This Bed-Dancing concept often gets a few chuckles but I want you to stay with me on this one as I explain exactly what it is (and isnt) and how you can incorporate this in your exercise routine today. Ill begin by expressing how essential Bed-Dancing was in my life right after I had the RNY gastric bypass bariatric weight-loss surgery: VERY ESSENTIAL. Thats shooting straight from the hip! Definition of Bed-Dancing: the exercise activity that incorporates established exercise movements while positioned on your back in the bed to minimize the stress and strains on joints and muscles when a person is morbidly obese. This is the best brief definition I could come up with since I am nowhere near a Webster genius. Right after my surgery, I knew that it was important to MOVE MY BODY and begin to exercise. The biggest benefit I saw at the time was that it increased my blood circulation that was necessary to help my surgical wounds to heal. This was my main motivation. And when I weighed 317 pounds, there was no way I was eager to incorporate an exercise routine because my body was so large, and my arthritis so painful, I just could not bear putting such stress on my joints and muscles at that heavy weight. I had a master plan to put on my favorite high-spirited CD (Latin music makes me feel like dancing), put on my sweats, and I went into my bedroom as I announced to the household, Dont bother me for one hour.no matter what, then shut the door. As I began to dance to the tunes, OH MY GOLLY I couldnt last more than five minutes! My incision hurt, my joints hurt, and I collapsed on my bed, falling deeper in disappointment that I could not see myself achieving an exercise routine. But soon, as the Latin CD kept spinning, I found myself moving to the music while I was in bed WOW I then thought, Hey, I can DANCE on my BACK! So with legs and arms in the air flailing like a floppy fish I discovered how someone who weighed 317 pounds COULD exercise but not the traditional way but by Bed-Dancing! Thus, the birth of my newly-found method launched me into a very SUCCESSFUL exercise routine that I could do often without putting stress on my joints! But be cautious when you talk about Bed-Dancing to others they automatically begin to chuckle at what you call the standard bed activity now. (blushing yet?) What you need for Bed-Dancing: A bedroom with a bed and a bedroom door that you can shut so you can bed-dance in private. Be sure to announce to the household that this is YOUR TIME and they are capable of getting along without you for at least the length of a CD. If not, they are far too dependant on you! A CD that excites you into dancing. A CD is better over a cassette tape or radio because you can program your music selection to skip, repeat, or play at random your tunes according to what you want to dance to. An exercise outfit such as sweats, t-shirt and shorts, or even your slip. Since youll be behind closed doors, you can wear whatever you want. However, when you actually have an outfit set aside for exercise, the mind gets in gear and stays more focused on what you are telling it to do and thats EXERCISE. An attitude to do Bed-Dancing. This is vital too. Keep you movements simple but aggressive, meaning that you arent making complicated moves with your arms and legs, but rather you are making the simple moves in a forceful and deliberate way much as a tap dancer or ballet dancer uses simple moves but with controlled and deliberate body disciplines. So as you can see, the equipment you need for Bed-Dancing is minimal and low cost since you already have most of what you need as these things are probably already around the house. If you lack in a dancing CD, go get one most cities have used CD shops. And as for your exercise outfit, you can find sweats at your local thrift store. And if you like Bed-Dancing in your unmentionables, thats okay too. Whatever works for you! Bed-Dancing helped me begin my serious exercise routine which eventually morphed into exercising on my feet and even to full-fledged real dancing again as the pounds fell off! Excessive use of alcohol can cause depression. Alcohol changes the brain chemistry as some evidence points out, increasing a person's predisposition to depression. The weather can also affect a person's mood and in some cases can precipitate depression. The dark days of winter bring on a form of depression commonly known as Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD to some people. However, the sunny days of spring and summer alleviate the depression. You may not view water in this way but its chemical constituency is two parts hydrogen to one part oxygen H2O. Together water and fertiliser will give your lawn everything it needs to grow and flourish. Then nature does the rest. Sometimes these come from natural sources but you will need to help with regular watering and maybe some lawn food. One of the major problems in proper lawn care is how much and how often they need food and water. Getting over these problems, though, is not difficult. If the area where you are has plenty of rainfall during the non-winter months, there is little you can or need to do. You cant really control the amount of rainwater a lawn receives, in most cases. The only step you can really take is to ensure that there is proper and sufficient drainage. Make sure that there is drainage wherever excessive water can collect on your lawn. Drains can take one of many forms. You can have a grate-covered pipe that is kept free of leaves and dirt that will allow excess water to flow out to the street or into a pond or other area. Good drainage is helpful even if sprinklers are your primary source of water for the lawn. The above type of drain may not always be possible. If, for example, you have a very large yard and have areas where water collects, then a shallow ditch may be good enough. You can make this look more attractive and functional by lining it with small pebbles. The ideal solution is to have a garden that slopes away from the house continuously, but not all properties are constructed in this way. This design stops the water from building up near the house which could cause damage to your foundations and basement. It also is good for the lawn as the water will flow more evenly over the entire surface and then drain off the lawn into side areas. If some of those areas are partly garden it will make make watering the garden less of a problem. Alternatively it may flow off into rocks or the street. If you don't get much rainfall then a sprinkler system is an easy solution to watering. In warm climates, run it for about fifteen each time but not necessarily every day. If you live in a hot area then fifteen minutes daily might be better but in a more moderate climate, this can be every other day and in some areas less often is preferable. Automatic sprinkler systems are best because then you can set the length and days of watering. Some systems are designed so that you can set different days of watering for up to two weeks. Then you can water on Monday one week and Tuesday or Wednsesday the next. Absolute regularity may not necessarily be the best thing for your lawn. When possible do your watering in the morning rather than the evening. Then you avoid having water on the lawn overnight where it contributes to the growth of harmful plant and insect life. Try not to water in the middle of a hot day. Even if the lawn could use it, it causes the grass leaf pores to open (when it is trying to conserve water) by cooling it down. This means that more water is evaporated than is absorbed, counteracting your intention. In some cases, it can lead to burning when water droplets attract sunlight onto the grass leaf. Crafts for Kids: Homemade Bird Feeders

Unfortunately, while children often wonder at the birds and wish to take part in helping to feed them, there is rarely anything a child can do to help. Here are a couple of suggestions to help them get involved and to let them make their own special bird feeders. Most children hate eating crusts of bread, but birds love them. Next time, rather than tossing the crust, hand them over to your child with a pencil or straw and have them poke a hole through the slices, about 1 inch from the top. If they wish, food coloring can be used to lightly dab some color on their bread slices, letting them make special designs for their bird friends. The bread should then be left to sit on the counter overnight so that it will dry out. The next day, thread a piece of yarn through them, hang the bread from the branches of a nearby tree and watch feathered friends flock to their new bird feeders. With a string of yarn, a straw, and some Cheerios, even small children can help create these fun bird feeders. Take the yarn (about 24 inches works well) and tie it around the middle of the straw. This will provide a base, allowing your child to thread the yarn through the cereal, not only making an effective bird feeder, but helping develop motor skills. When they have threaded the cereal up to the top, carefully hold the top of the string and then untie the bottom from the straw. Knot the two of these ends together, forming a circlet of cereal, which can be hung outside as a great bird snack. This can also be done using different colored fruit cereals, helping your child with repetitive pattern exercises. Letting your child become more involved in tasks like this, not only helps them learn but gives them a sense of responsibility as well. Have them keep track of how long it takes for their homemade bird feeders, so they know when it will be time to make more. Have them make charts or draw pictures of what kinds of birds come to their feeders and let them look through books, to identify who their new feathered friends are. Not only will the birds thank you, but your kids will have a great time too.
