By Mike Taylor Before going out to buy a new bed set you should take some time to familiarize yourself with the different components that make up the modern day bed. Knowing this can save you both time and money while shopping for what many consider to be one of the major purchases you make in life. After all, we spend about one third of our lives in bed so we want to be sure and choose a bed set we will be happy with. Most traditional bed sets are based on the same tried and true design: The Bed Frame The bed frame is what holds your box springs and mattress up off the floor. Most modern frames are made from wood or metal with higher quality frames being adjustable to accommodate different mattress sizes. Note that frames made for larger mattresses need to have a center support to prevent sagging in the middle. Box Springs Box Springs are usually purchased with a new mattress because they are designed to work together as a set and if you need a new mattress the odds are you could also use a new box spring. This thought isnt carved in stone and sometimes you can find sets that are mismatched and save quite a bit of money. If you were to cut open your box springs you would find a set of wire coils that are tuned to provide just enough give but not too much that the bed would sag while you sleep. The Mattress The mattress is the part of the bed system that provides the support your body needs to sleep well at night. If you do not have adequate support you will toss and turn at night and can wake up stiff and sore. Lack of support is the primary reason for people sleeping poorly at night. There are many types of mattresses to choose from: Traditional Coil These mattresses have individual coils in them to provide support and are the most popular and oldest type of mattress technology. Memory Foam Quickly gaining in popularity this mattress is made from a heat sensitive foam material that gets softer as your body warms it up and provides just the right amount of support where you need it. This is the type of mattress I have and I love it. Water Bed These use large bags filled with water and a baffle system to help provide support. They must be heated as they are too cold to sleep on by themselves and are not as popular as they once were. Air Bed Another popular mattress is the air bed. Similar to a waterbed an air bed is filled with air and many of the higher end models have remote controls that let each side of the bed be individually adjusted for a custom comfort level. I personally did not like sleeping on this type of bed at all. The Padding This topmost layer of the bed is usually made from cotton, wool or even memory foam and is the main determining factor in the comfort level rating of the mattress. Firmer mattresses have less padding and softer mattresses have more with the softest mattress available today being the pillow top mattress. Now that you know the different parts of a bed set you can go shopping with confidence knowing that you have the knowledge to buy the perfect set that will give you the best nights sleep you have ever had.
